At Your Eye Surgeons Kelowna, our mission is to provide quality healthcare, including specialized Glaucoma Care, to all of our patients. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone can feel comfortable seeking medical care, including comprehensive Ophthalmology Assessments.
Dr. Gavin Docherty completed his medical school and residency at the University of British Columbia. He then completed a one-year fellowship in Glaucoma and anterior segment surgery at Cumming School of Medicine in Calgary, AB. Following this he moved to Kelowna where he successfully started Interior Health’s first surgical glaucoma program at the Kelowna General Hospital. Dr. Docherty continues to speak at the national level on glaucoma care. He is currently researching new techniques for glaucoma surgery and is involved in teaching medical students, residents and research. His future goals involve improving glaucoma services for Interior Health and expanding his practice to include oculoplastic services. Dr. Docherty is currently President of the Kelowna Medical Society and an active member of the Canadian Glaucoma Society and Canadian Ophthalmology Society. Growing up in the Okanagan Dr. Docherty is proud to be building and providing this service for his home community. Our goal as a group practice is to provide timely and compassionate ophthalmic care for Interior Health.
Dr. Alison Banwell completed her residency and ophthalmology training at Queens's University. During her training she was recognized several times with awards including the Dr. Avi Wallerstein Award in Ophthalmology, the W.G. Anglin Scholarship in Surgery, and the D.T. Smith Prize in Pharmacology. She was a finalist in the Rhode's scholarship application process. Dr. Banwell has multiple publications. She is a dedicated clinician and talented surgeon. Her practice is aimed at providing top level glaucoma care as well as cataract assessment and management. Growing up in the Okanagan Dr. Banwell is proud to be building and providing this service for her home community in collaboration with Dr. Docherty and Dr. Scheepers.
Dr. Scheepers is a comprehensive ophthalmologist with over 14 years of dedicated practice in British Columbia. Trained in South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Canada (FRCSC), I provide high-volume, full-spectrum eye care to patients across the BC Interior.
During my time in British Columbia, I have performed more than 18,000 surgical procedures. These include advanced cataract surgery (including presbyopia-correcting lenses), glaucoma surgery (trabeculectomy and Xen 63 stents), pterygium excision, YAG and SLT laser procedures, retinal lasers, and the management of retinal tears and medical retina conditions.
I welcome referrals for the full range of ophthalmic conditions. My special interests include cataract surgery with presbyopia correction, neuro-ophthalmology, glaucoma, medical retina, and retinal tears. I am particularly committed to delivering advanced, high-quality eye care close to home for patients in Kelowna and the surrounding communities.
Prior to relocating to Canada, I served as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham University Hospitals in the United Kingdom.
I am an active researcher with several peer-reviewed publications on trifocal and extended-depth-of-focus intraocular lenses, presbyopia-correcting implants, and entropion surgery. My work on entropion surgery received the NHG Eye Institute Research Publication Award.
I have held leadership roles with the British Columbia Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, including serving as Past President. I am also a Clinical Instructor at the University of British Columbia.
Passionate about serving the people of the BC Interior, I look forward to continuing to deliver advanced, compassionate ophthalmic care to my patients in Kelowna and surrounding communities.
